FIREPEX™ System from REHAU Secures UL 1821 Listing for Exposed Installation Under a Smooth, Flat Ceiling
FIREPEX is First PEX-Based System to Receive Listing
LEESBURG, Va., Oct. 15, 2008 – REHAU announced its receipt of an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 1821 listing (for “Thermoplastic Sprinkler Pipe and Fittings for Fire Protection Service”) for exposed installation of the company’s FIREPEX™ system under a smooth, flat ceiling.
“We are excited to have secured this latest listing from UL, as it further expands installation options for the FIREPEX system, while underscoring its high level of reliability,” said Michael Cabral, account manager for fire protection at REHAU. “Securing this listing for FIREPEX also marks a significant step forward in the fire protection industry-at-large, as it is the first PEX-based system to receive it.”
The UL Heptane-fueled burn tests employed a variety of sprinkler temperatures, spacing and flow rates, and resulted in a listing that covers the use of FIREPEX when attached directly to the ceiling utilizing Listed Quick Response Pendent Sprinklers with a 170˚ F (77˚ C) maximum temperature rating. It additionally specifies a 3.75-inch maximum deflector distance from the ceiling, and a maximum 15-foot spacing between sprinklers.
“During the tests, the FIREPEX pipe was exposed to temperatures approaching 1,100˚ F,” Cabral said. “This provides further evidence that REHAU’s FIREPEX system is composed of robust products and performs successfully under extreme high-heat conditions.”
“We look forward to the heightened awareness and acceptance of FIREPEX that we believe will come from this latest listing,” said Cabral, “and also eagerly anticipate working with UL to secure future additional listings that will make its installation possible in an even greater number of applications.”
